About Jamal Edmonds

For more than 20 years, educator and master hair stylist Jamal Edmonds has consistently created a buzz within the hair industry.  Graduating in the top percentile of his class from Bennett Career Institute, Jamal obtained a certification in management, as well as, his cosmetology license from the District of Columbia Board of Barber and Cosmetology.  He is the owner and creative director of Lamaj in the City, located in Washington, DC.

Jamal joined Mizani as an educator, teaching specialized advanced theory classes, as well as, a series of specially curated classes on business, hair extensions, and texture.  He performs tradeshow and special product presentations for both Mizani distributors and salon professionals.  He consistently partners with Mizani for brand-building activities, which lead to their most recent collaboration of Mizani installing Lamaj in the City as its first ever flagship salon.

A master hair technician, Jamal’s skillful hands continue to make a statement in the industry in the form of creative contribution to commercial print, education, glamour, media, and the runway.  His work was featured in an episode of the Style network’s program, "Whose Wedding is it Anyway?".  Jamal's work was published in The Business of Professional Modeling, a book featuring more than 100 industry professionals.  His artistry appeared on the cover of Washington Life magazine and was featured in editorial spreads in Essence magazine.  His other print credits include: Amy’s Bridal, Black Hair, Black Hair U.K., Black Passion, Hype Hair, Mazza International, Montage, Orlando Style, Seven Tribes, Sheer Beauty Products, Sophisticates, and Style Q.

Jamal Edmonds is a Ford’s Top Ten honoree.  Under his leadership, Salon Lamaj was a finalist for Steve Harvey’s Neighborhood Award for Best Beauty Salon, two years in a row.  He has provided his hair care expertise to numerous famous tresses, including June Ambrose, author, celebrity stylist and costume designer; Debra Lee, chairman and CEO, Black Entertainment Television (BET); Eva Marcille, actress, fashion model and television host; Bevy Smith, television personality; Angie Stone and Elle Varner, Grammy-nominated musicians. Jamal has been hired for countless events and campaigns such as: the BET Awards programs, BET Upfront promotional tours, "Black Girls Rock!" and New York Fashion Week.

Jamal continues to maintain a solid clientele, providing his artistic ability and consultant services for graduations, proms, training, videos, wedding parties, and special events in the Washington Metropolitan Area, as well as, in cities across the United States, upon request.  In addition to sharing his talent with his clientele, Jamal also gives back to his community through various philanthropic efforts and charitable events.  He continues to volunteer his time and knowledge to his alma mater and numerous charitable organizations.
